How to setup your butterfly marketing script
If you’re thinking of creating a Butterfly Marketing membership site, the good news is the script is now available as shareware – you can grab a copy here.
The support forums for the Butterfly Marketing script contain some great video tutorials and help files showing you how to setup your first site.
The issue I had, was I needed to watch the videos and take notes as I went. Fortunately, I documented all my notes and am including them below so you don’t have to go through the videos yourself and take notes!
How to setup your Butterfly Marketing script

1. Copy unzipped contents of BMnewinstall2.09.zip to www.NewDomainName.com/go/
You’ll need your FTP Details -
FTP address: http://www.yourdomain.com
FTP user: username
FTP password: password
2. Setup the following permissions:
/go/ to 777
/go/config/ to 777
/go/config/constants.php to 777
/go/templates/ to 777
/go/templates/* to 777
3. Create a database for the new install. Note database name, username and password.
Website: Website name
DB Name: YourDatabaseName
DB username: YourDatabaseUsername (normally the same as DB Name)
DB Password: Password
DB Host: This could be ‘localhost’ or in Godaddy, you will need the actual web address like ‘YourDatabaseName.db.4230100.hostedresource.com’
4. Run www.NewDomainName.com/go/install
- Follow on-screen instructions
- Enter Database details as per step 3 (use full path to Database for Host, not localhost for Godaddy hosting)
5. Delete install folder:
/go/install/
6. Change permission settings
/go/config to 755
/go/config/constants.php to 644
/go/templates/* to 644 (change back to 777 update templates)
7. Setup Cron Jobs
In Godaddy:
/FullFilePath/go/admin/cron_expand.php
/FullFilePath/go/admin/cron_expand_followups.php
/FullFilePath/go/admin/cron_send.php
In cPanel:
php /FullFilePath/go/admin/cron_expand.php [minute: */10]
php /FullFilePath/go/admin/cron_expand_followups.php [hour: 12]
php /FullFilePath/go/admin/cron_send.php [minute: */5]
8. Login to www.NewDomainName.com/go/admin
- Login with Database password
9. Setup admin settings
- Payment Options
- Set Security password
- Add Butterfly Marketing Affiliate Link – https://paydotcom.com/r/2340/leighburke/23467798/
10. Create template for main page – video here: http://www.butterflymarketing.com/videos/404-template-2/
- Template here: http://www.butterflymarketing.com/th.htm
- Login to http://NewDomainName.com/go/admin
- Click on Site Design > Site Templates
- Select ‘The Main Template’ from ‘Main Site Templates’ dropdown.
- Paste code from http://www.butterflymarketing.com/th.htm in ‘Content’ box, then click ‘Save Changes’.
11. Setup header and footer – video here: http://www.butterflymarketing.com/videos/404-template-2/
- FTP header and footer files to /go/images/ directory
- Edit code in ‘The Main Template’ to reference header and footer
- Change BG color of table cell for header and footer to match header and footer main color.
12. Setup an index redirect – video here: http://www.butterflymarketing.com/videos/404-index/
- create a file called index.php with the following content:

13. Setup membership types
14. Choose whether to have sign up box on front page, and whether to have free or just paid membership (set under General Site Settings – put in the homepage.html the tag {signup_form} where you want the form to appear.)
15. Setup Auto-responder info
That’s it! There’s a lot of other options you can tweak. In particular, you might want to take a look at the affiliate tools, and the layout and look and feel of your site.

I followed the directions of Mike Ambrosio using Hostgator and Filezilla, and was doing up to your Step 6, when I encountered the following problems;
I. I was unable to change the permissions to 777 in the root file name (which I called BFM2). It immediately reverted to 755. The other permission changes were done without difficulty.
2. I was able to pull up the form in your Step 4, but got an error message repeatedly. as follows:
“Check Database Settings
Temporary Error
Right now this service is unavailble. We are experiencing a temporary error and will be fixed within 24 hours.
A complete report with this problem was already sent to our programmers and they are working on fixing it asap.
We apologise for this. Please try again later.
SITENAME Staff.

This error has not changed over the last 3 days, despite the promise that it would be corrected in 24 hours.
I can go no further now.
Any suggestions?
